Challenge your students to demonstrate that they are one of the best in the state and/or nation by participating in the annual National Spanish Examinations (NSE). The NSE is an academic competition to recognize student achievement in the study of Spanish and to promote further pursuit of the teaching and learning of the language. Students can share their accomplishments on college applications and scholarship forms. Teachers can demonstrate the proficiency of their students compared to other programs in the state and nation as well as the attainment of national standards in language study.

During the past few years over 2000 Minnesota high school students participated and more than 155,000 nationwide. Each May, the AATSP-MN recognizes students for their achievement on the exam by hosting an awards ceremony. Teachers, students, and their relatives are invited to celebrate at this special event. Medals and ribbons are awarded along with pins and certificates signed by the governor. Photographs are taken of the ceremony and can be later downloaded as keepsakes. The big day concludes with door prizes. Visit the links above to see pictures from previous years.

Wellstone CenterAATSP-MN hosts an awards ceremony each May at the
Wellstone Center in the heart of St. Paul's latino community.

Additionally, students who have taken the exam multiple times are eligible to apply for travel awards worth $500 and college-bound participants can receive a $1000 scholarship. Check out the
Travel & Scholarship Information page for details!

Registration begins in November each year. For more information, sign up for the MN National Spanish Exam
mailing list. The national NSE maintains a web site with practice activities and details. AATSP-MN explains the chapter's role on its registration page. You are welcome to contact NSE Coordinator Russ Simonsen if you have questions or concerns.
